Study Tours & Pilgrimage

To commemorate the 2,600th Anniversary of Buddhism, we would like to bring you closer to the places where Buddhism flourished, and rekindle our Buddhist faith. Nalanda Institute is organising special study tours to Borobudur in July, and to Sri Lanka in September, followed by a pilgrimage to India and Nepal in December 2012.  All these tours will be led by our founder, Bro. H S Tan. 

With Bro.Tan’s clear explanation and commentaries, the previous tour participants and pilgrims often cherished their trips as truly educational and even transformative.  Therefore, for those who have waited for these educational tours or performing the pilgrimage, especially with Bro.Tan as the guide, do grab the chance and go for it.

24 & 25 March 2012 - Satipatthāna Sutta Study with Meditation Workshop (Part 2)

"One-way, monks, is this path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and dejection, for the attainment of the (true) method, for the realisation of Nibbāna, namely, the Four Establishments of Mindfulness..." ~ the Buddha

Ven. Aggacitta returned to Nalanda Institute to continue the part two of the Satipatthāna Sutta Study with Meditation Workshop.  With him were Ven. Balacitta and Ven. Vijaya.  During this session, Ven. Aggacitta explained on Dhammānupassanā, the Contemplation of Dhammas which include sections on  hindrances, (sense) bases, awakening factors and truths.

Included in the programme were guided meditation, personal practice, group discussion and  presentation.  During the Q & A session, Ven. Aggacitta answered various questions from the participants pertaining to the learning and practice of the Satipatthana.  Before the end of the course, the participants were asked to reflect on the significant insights for understanding and practice resulting from this workshop.

26 February 2012 - Alavaka Sutta Commentarial Course

"Faith is here a man's best treasure;

The lecturer started off the course with group sharing on “What is this Sutta about?”

Participants discussed with each other about their understanding on the Alavaka Sutta.  For some participants, they were reading the sutta for the very first time.

Group representatives were called to present on their sharings.

Bro. Yong later clarified and explained the intention and purpose of the group discussion with its topic. 

He encouraged the participants to read from the text, and not to read into the text which tends to superimpose on what the Buddha has said to us.

18 & 19 February 2012 - Satipatthana Sutta Study with Meditation Workshop

Nalanda Institute has invited Ven. Aggacitta to conduct the Satipatthana Sutta commentarial course with meditation.  The whole sutta will be covered in two workshops at Nalanda Centre.  During the first workshop in February, the venerable explained on Kayanupassana, Vedananupassana and Cittanupassana based on the Satipatthana Sutta from Majjhima Nikaya No. 10.

Besides sitting meditation, the participants had a chance to practise kayanupassana on standing posture.

There were several group discussions during the workshop.

Group representative was called to present the group findings.
The reverend would later clarify and explain on the topic discussed.

The Convocation Ceremony for the graduates of LMS 442 Certificate in Teaching (in Dharma School) was completed successful on 10 December 2011, Saturday, 4.30pm.  It was a testimony of their dedication, hard work and achievement for the one-year course which consists of 7 modules, namely Philosophy of Education, Leadership in Education, Class Management, Counseling in Education, Education Technology, Educational Psychology and Practical Assessment.

Besides, two graduates were also awarded for their 100% attendance for the whole duration of the course.

Special gifts were given to Ms. Maggie Chan and Mdm. Mudita Chan (in the picture) for their consistent voluntary work during the course.

Profile of Bro. Aruna :

Bro. Aruna is a Researcher for the Dhammachai Tipitaka Project based in Thailand. He is also the teaching assistant and a PhD candidate in Graduate School of Buddhist Studies, International Buddhist College, Thailand.

He obtained his MPhil Degree in Pāli, MA Degree in Buddhist Studies and First Class Honour BA Special Degree in Pāli from University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He has also given lectures in Sri Lankan renowned universities.

During his educational and scholastic involvements, he has received various academic awards, authored books and published various research papers, mainly on Pāli, Tipitaka & Commentaries, Sub-Commentaries, Hybrid Sanskrit and Classical Sanskrit.

LMS 241 Managing Funds Effectively

LMS 241 Managing Funds Effectively is another new course brought to you by Nalanda Institute on this Saturday, 10am – 5pm at Nalanda Centre.

The course is specially tailored to provide basic financial training to volunteers who handle projects constantly or treasurers of Buddhist organisations who are not from financial background. The content encompasses how to prepare cash budget, accounting documents such as statement of receipt and expenses, bank reconciliation and internal control procedures, amongst others.

Malaysian Institution Bestowed World Renown Pāli Tipitaka - Nalanda Institute appointed the custodian of the gift of wisdom and peace

Kuala Lumpur, 7 May 2010 – Nalanda Institute, Malaysia, a leading Buddhist education institution in Malaysia, is a proud recipient of the World Tipitaka, a gift of wisdom and peace, by the Dhamma Society of Thailand in honour of the late Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, elder sister of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Nalanda Institute was awarded the World Tipitaka as a recognition for its commitment and contribution to integral human development in the country, and is the first and only Malaysian institution to be presented with this revered gift.

“Today marks a historic milestone for Nalanda Institute and the Malaysian Buddhist community. The gift of the World Tipitaka reaffirms the stability and maturity of our nation amidst social diversity and cultural dynamism, and our readiness to be entrusted with the noble responsibility of preserving and advocating the Buddha’s message of peace and harmony,” said Dr. Tan Ho Soon, the Director of Nalanda Institute, Malaysia.

Since its inaugural presentation in 2005, the limited-edition World Tipitaka has been conferred to leading institutions worldwide as a means to preserve and promote the universal education of world peace and happiness. It also serves as a gesture of goodwill to foster bilateral relations between Thailand and the recipient country.

The recipient institutions are nominated based on their track records in research, study, and contribution to human development and world peace. To date, only 20 countries and 40 institutions have been awarded the treasured World Tipitaka including the Constitutional Court of Thailand, the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Maha Bodhi Society of India, Uppsala University of Sweden, the University of Melbourne, Australia, and the University of Oslo, Norway.

The official presentation ceremony of the 40-volume World Tipitaka was held at the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on 7 May 2010. The ceremony was witnessed by a congregation of over 100 dignitaries comprising the Chancellor of the World Tipitaka, Thailand, H.E. the Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, scholars, educators, diplomats and officials from Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

ABOUT THE WORLD TIPITAKA
The World Tipitaka is a Pāli Tipitaka from the Resolution of the Buddhist Era 2500 (1956-1957) Great International Council. Pāli Tipitaka is the Buddha’s teaching in Pāli language that has been recorded, recited, and memorized since the time of the Buddha. It has since been faithfully transmitted and preserved to this day.

The Tipitaka, literally translated as the ‘Three Collections’, consist of the ancient scriptures of the Buddha’s teaching divided into three main divisions, i.e. the Sutta Pitaka (teachings and methods to peace and happiness), Vinaya (higher rules and trainings), and Abhidhamma (scholastic explanation of the science of mind).

A complete set of 40-volume Pāli Tipitaka in Roman script was successfully published by the Dhamma Society of Thailand in 2005. As Roman is a universally accepted script, the world’s peoples will be able to pronounce the sounds of Dhamma more accurately and extensively. Moreover, the Roman script is widely used in modern ICT (information and communication technologies), thus a Romanized Pāli Tipitaka possesses greater potential to be disseminated worldwide.

The late Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, had graciously supported the publication of Romanized Pāli Tipitaka and presented it as a royal gift of Dhamma to leading institutions worldwide since 2005. The royal gift symbolizes a gift of Wisdom and Peace from the Thai people to the peoples of the world.

Nalanda was honoured to host the former Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia and Special Envoy of the Dhamma Society Thailand, H.E. The envoy has earlier presided over and graced the presentation ceremony of the World Tipitaka at the Royal Thai Embassy on 7 May 2010.
