EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN JAPAN

16 March 2011

Dear members and devotees,

Many of us are painfully aware about the twin disasters that struck Japan on 11 March 2011, namely the massive earthquake registering 9.0 on the Richter Scale, and the ensuing Tsunami that obliterated many settlements in Northeastern Honshu.

As of today, the exact death toll and the extent of losses are yet unascertained. The Japanese authorities and public, aided by some foreign helpers, are frantically sifting through debris in the hope of miraculously finding survivors; and also, to undertake the grim prospect of identifying the dead. Millions of people are reported to have lost their homes, and are now facing cold weather without clean water and electricity supply.

Our hearts go out to all the victims of this disaster! We pray for their strength and resolve in facing this calamity. We also pray for the deceased and wish for their well-being in the after-life.

We also applaud the dedication and tenacity of the rescuers and volunteers who are helping victims cope with the disaster. May the workers be successful in carrying out their respective tasks, and be free from harm and danger.

We will be offering our prayers to the victims, and to all beings in need at Nalanda Centre every night at 8.00pm, starting today until Wesak in May. We invite devotees to come and join us whenever possible to strengthen our devotional fervor. We also request you to spare some kind thoughts everyday at home or at work for the suffering beings everywhere, and make it a habit to always aspire that, “May all beings be free from suffering!”

May all beings find peace. Sotthi.

With metta,

Nalanda Buddhist Society

NALANDA PATRON’S DAY, 18 March 2011

Nalanda Buddhist Society first observed “Nalanda Patron’s Day” on 18 March 2007. The day is designated an annual Nalanda event to commemorate and appreciate all our donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed tremendously to the growth of Nalanda, and by extension, to the development of Buddhist education.

On “Patron’s Day”, Nalanda members and devotees offer pujas for the well-being of all our benefactors, past and present. We also transfer merits to those who have passed away.

March 18th was chosen as the day to commemorate our benefactors because it happens to be the birth anniversary of our late spiritual adviser, the Most Venerable Dr. K Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero. Customarily, Nalanda Society and Nalanda Vidyalaya will offer a Sanghika Dana at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields, where the late Venerable was abbot for over five decades.

This year, we are continuing with this time-honoured tradition of expressing our gratitude and offering thanks to our donors and volunteers. Nalanda will be offering dana at the Maha Vihara at 11.30am on Friday, 18 March 2011, and two pujas at 9.00am and 8.00pm at Nalanda Centre on the same day.

We welcome all members and devotees to join us on this wholesome occasion at Nalanda Centre as well as at the Maha Vihara. We pray that the merits accrued by our benefactors lead them to liberation from greed, avarice and delusion. We also pray that all beings be free from suffering.

Anumodana.

Sis. Buddhini Tan
Hon. Secretary
Nalanda Buddhist Society
